Auld Lang Syne, Mommy Style
Now that a new year is upon us, there is never better time for reflection. On New Years Eve, I thought about my “wildest” New Years Eve. I was 20, and I went out with Micki, and met up with Tammy at the Landing to watch fireworks. I remember walking back across the Main Street bridge and kissing someone I didn’t even know. Then of course Micki and I ending up in a hotel room with two men from the midwest somewhere - Nebraska I think. I remember fighting off the smaller of the two, then sitting in the bathroom, sick to my stomach as I listened to her and the taller of the two engaging in their celebration.
Moving ahead 10 years, to the first New Years Eve I ever spent with a man. We watched the ball drop on TV and went to sleep. How I thought I could never be happier or spend a better time on the last day of the year.
Fast forward 7 more years. I spent the day doing dishes, cooking, cleaning. At 11:30 that night, I was standing the in garage, putting tiny sleepers and onsies in the dryer. And as I reflected on New Years past, I smiled to myself, because I knew I had never been happier.
The next hour I spent watching Daniel through the baby monitor, to make ceratain the neighboring revelers’ noise didn’t wake him. He slept peacefully through all of the fireworks and the shouting. At midnight I got to wish my husband a Happy New Year via the telephone, as he was hard at work at his second job, supporting his family as he does so well.
I went to sleep that night so very very content. I spent this New Years Eve as a Mom. What a wonderful way to spend it.
